Which times tables should my child learn first?
Most children learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2, the 3, 4 and 8 times tables in Year 3, and the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables in Year 4. By the end of Year 4 they are expected to recall every fact up to 12 × 12 – which is what the Multiplication Tables Check tests.
Tips for learning times tables faster
- Learn one table at a time on Easy, then move to mixed questions.
- Use known facts: 4× is double 2×; 8× is double 4×; 6× is 5× plus one more.
- Remember that 3 × 7 is the same as 7 × 3 – that halves the facts to learn.
- Play two or three rounds every day and try to beat your best score.
Once multiplication is secure, practise the inverse with our division facts game.
