Free square numbers game

A square number is a number multiplied by itself – for example 7 × 7 = 49, written 7². This free game helps upper KS2 children recall square numbers up to 12² = 144 quickly. Choose Squares, pick a level and play for 60 seconds.

The square numbers to learn

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121 and 144. Children meet square numbers in Year 5 and use them in Year 6 for area, number patterns and problem solving.

Tips

  • Learn them in order first, then practise mixed.
  • Notice the pattern of differences: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 …
  • Square numbers are also on the diagonal of a times tables grid – strong times tables make this easy.
