Free doubling and halving game

Doubling means multiplying by 2; halving means dividing by 2. This free game helps children double and halve numbers quickly – choose Doubling or Halving, pick a level and play for 60 seconds.

Why doubling and halving are so useful

Doubling and halving are key mental maths strategies. They help children work out harder facts (8 × 7 is double 4 × 7), find half of an amount, and check answers. Children start doubling small numbers in Year 1 and use the strategy all the way through KS2.

Tips

  • Double the tens and the ones separately: double 36 = 60 + 12 = 72.
  • Halve even numbers first, then try odd numbers like half of 15 = 7.5.
  • Remember near doubles: 6 + 7 is double 6 plus 1.

Try next: times tables or number bonds.
